Christopher, in Greek, literally means "Christ-bearer." Christopher carried Jesus across a stream and was Baptized by Him. The medal is never properly shown - just an oval shape - but Saint Christopher medals usually portray a man with the child Jesus on his back. He is supposed to be proof against sudden death. Saint Christopher is the patron saint of travel, travel-related careers and bachelors. Basically, all saints have medals of varying shapes, although oval ones are very popular. Some are circular and others are vaguely cross-shaped. It's understandable it might be confused with a Saint medal, because a lot of Catholic medallions are oval-shaped. The medal with Mary on it, is it one with rays of light coming from a globe in Mary's hands and does it have, "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee" written around the rim? If it does, that is a Miraculous medal, and properly blessed, is supposed to invoke the Holy Mother's protection. There's something in me that loves Dally being Catholic. Even if she didn't include it in the book, perhaps she thought that it would add a little depth to Dallas. I think that your theory is both well-founded, and probable. Maybe it was easier for Coppola to use what Matt already had than make a prop guy run out and find something to use.)

Look in the church scene when he leans over Pony though, and it looks like he's wearing two medallions there too - but moments later he lights his match off a single medallion on the chain.I suspect these medallions were Matt's, I've seen non-Outsider pics where he's wearing one - as well as that huge skull ring he's got on most of the movie lol. (Interestingly, on the DVD cover it looks like Matt has both the Christopher and a crucifix on top of it, it's clearly a different shape than the oval he's wearing through the movie that we see him light his match on many times. Christopher is the patron saint of travellers as well as protection against sudden death.

A necklace stands out more (especially with the size of the one he's wearing lol) and the viewer sees it easily, so when Johnny notices it and mentions it, we know what he saw. Perhaps Francis Ford Coppola thought a ring wouldn't stand out enough for the viewers to notice it as Johnny does. In the book Dally gives Sylvia a ring when they're going out.
